Beauty of Life
(for Rodney Bender)
Portland, OR 2016
Beauty of Life is a series of twenty stainless steel screens that surround a generator outside the Hollywood East Apartments in Northeast Portland. Client: Home Forward, Portland, OR.
The screens live next to the raised bed gardening area used by the residents, so I decided to return to the works of William Morris for inspiration. The client requested some sort of memorial for a local man, Rodney Bender, who made a big impact on the city's gardening communities before his life ended. For this reason, I decided to also reuse the title Beauty of Life for this project.
As with my other stainless steel public works, I created the original artwork for this project with scissors and paper.
