Chandellear

(collaboration with Christian Bannister)
Quirk Gallery, Richmond, VA. October 2007
part of 2007 installation series curated by Susie Ganch
This project began in a brainstorming session and evolved through a series of coincidences. We were already intrigued with the idea of making a sound chandelier, and that led to a renewed interest in the Chandelier Graveyard, a section of the vast caves of Lechuguilla, New Mexico where spelunkers determined that old chandeliers go when they pass on. We thought about notions of intimacy, private vs. public persona, and indoor vs. outdoor environments.
Rather than emitting light, Chandellear plays an eight channel sound piece through
integrated speakers. The sound piece is continuously overlapping and looping, forever creating a collage of changing sound.
