This piece was inspired by the discovery of a bushtit nest in my front yard. I loved seeing bits of the native plants from other parts of my garden integrated into its bizarre, sock-like form. Following my recent godseye project, this enlarged nest form blends the discarded materials of our everyday lives with the mending stitching of Japanese sashiko. The structure incorporates artificial flowers, fishing line, cleaning brushes, burlap, hair, wool, shells, beads, laser-cutting scraps, produce netting, and a shower scrub. It stands as a continuation of my fascination with avian architecture—documenting the modern species that must weave our discards into their home-building traditions to survive.
