My exploration of thickets has moved from the architecture of isolation to the strength of communal networks. Microclimates, my latest installment in this ongoing series, deconstructs the thicket even further—fracturing a single, highly biodiverse ecosystem into thirty separate panels. Returning to the metaphor of an apartment building, each individual panel isolates a specific region within the bramble, housing its unique denizens and the winter food stashes required to survive the season. Ecologically, a thicket functions as a master of climate buffering, shielding its interior to create dramatic shifts in temperature, humidity, and light between its floor and canopy. These panels attempt to capture that hidden, internal atmosphere—specifically the distinct quality and color of the light trapped deep within the dense brush.
